Susan Roberts

I work with emotions, feelings, and sensations. My work deals with ideas of beauty. It seeks to magnetically draw in or repel the viewer through the encounter with surface or tactility. I am interested in notions of womanliness and where this leads.

I work in 3-D, using clay and plaster but also consolidate form in 2-D, drawing the surfaces I have experienced. I have been working with metals using both bronze and cast iron, I also draw, and use  photography, film, and installations depending on the idea. I have shown internationally, in NY, Melbourne Australia, Dublin, Venice and Vienna in group shows. Some of my work is held in private collections. I am a member of several groups, vice chair in Sculpture Cymru, a committee member of Womens’ Arts Association, a member of The Welsh Group and Cardiff Drawing Group, and have recently set up with two others an exhibiting group acting as a hub with invited artists.

Susan Roberts who has passed away recently was one of the founder members of Sculpture Cymru, strong in her engagement both with her own practice and the importance of this very varied group of sculptors. Carefully punctilious in making arrangements to get to meetings if she could, she continued in spite of frequent bouts of ill health to engage with the momentum of the group, of what it might achieve and its continuing presence as a forum in which to exhibit and make her art. Encouraged by her to join the group some ten years ago I had great regard for her kindness and her spirited engagement with her own practice – she will be much missed.

I first met Sue at an exhibition of the Womens Arts Association where she was exhibiting huge drawings of seated women. Since then she started to make sculptures of the same subject. She, Valerie Coffin Price, Gwyn Price and I showed together as Four by Four and then together created the two Sculpture Cymru shows, Place at Dyffryn Gardens and more recently, the show Meeting of Minds at Art Central in Barry. Sue was a member of the Welsh Group and she also became a member of Iron Maidens 11; Made in Wales. She was a delight as a colleague and a friend.
