Paul Mitchell
My work is an attempt to translate metaphysical thoughts and understandings into the tangible and focusses upon the notion of the space between the conscious and subconscious. The space which allows information – nuances, feelings, impressions etc. to pass through to the subconscious and vice versa allowing me to elicit images of experiential subjectivity. Different materials are utilized as part of this process from carved stone to glass to leather. It’s the challenge of this diversity which I find stimulating.
Paul originally trained in the early 1980’s as a carver, specialising in marble and more recently expanded his training into glass, completing an MA in 2023. A specialist in conservation, he has taught stone carving, letter cutting and since 1994 has run his architectural stone conservation business based in Cardiff. Paul has exhibited in private galleries and in 2022 curated for a Cardiff gallery, an exhibition of sculpture by contemporary stone carvers based across the UK.
