“My art is the essence of my experience, not a representation of it”, Richard Long
Based in Dinas Powys, in the Vale of Glamorgan, I am an artist who enjoys the challenge of working across a variety of materials. Having previously trained as a classical and contemporary ballet dancer, I found this new creativity later in life, as a painter, which led me back to higher education, achieving a BA Hons (first-class award) in Fine Art at Cardiff School of Art and Design in 2018.
My practice, has become increasingly three-dimensional, exploring my own perspective on life and can be personal and deeply reflective. As researched as part of my degree, I find that I am still constantly drawn to the metaphors surrounding the common wooden clothes peg, it being maternal, mundane, and unseen, and they have now become the grounding of my creative process. These “pegscapes” / “sculptural sketches” act as a warm-up to the main event, deconstructing and reconstructing, working instinctively, using materials that are not only sensorially intriguing but resound with my conscious and sub-conscious understanding of the world. From these, an idea evolves, a concept that inspires me, and that inevitably allows me to fully commit to a new piece of work.
I find that connecting with others is also an important part of my practise, engaging my viewer, drawing them in, and fostering conversations, whatever they might be.….
