Billie Ireland

“Carbon body” mixed recycled media turned to carbon using pyrolysis.

Billie Ireland makes research-driven, site-responsive, temporary land art interventions, sculpture, paperworks and film.

Since completing her MA at Aberystwyth University the process of making biochar has made carbon and ecology central to her work. Biochar is a type of charcoal like, carbon rich material produced by heating biomass with limited oxygen. Billie’s material research into sculptural biochar has been funded by Oxford University, Imperial College and the UK hub for greenhouse gas removal.

With carbon’s legacy of power, extraction and exploitation it has been through sacred ecology that Billie has attempted to reconnect with this sustaining material. Themes of sacrifice, fragility, and resilience are within her sculptural works, offering insights into the intersections of care, creation and regeneration
