Myra Ryan
My work, both in two and three dimensions, is a meditation on the continuous line – a concept rich with both literal and metaphorical meanings. From the ancient allure of a spiral to the profound simplicity of a ring, this unbroken thread has captivated artists and cultures for millennia.
My process is a dialogue with ancient natural materials including stone. I work with blocks submerged for eons beneath long forgotten seas. The magic lies in splitting colossal blocks with the same plugs and feathers asgenerations of quarrymen before me. A rhythmic tap, a pause,a soft whisper, a fine crack, revealing a surface untouched for 150 million years.
I also explore other natural materials, some of which I cultivate myself. My mark-making mirrors the directness of this process, allowing the continuous line to emerge swiftly and intuitively, with no revisions.
This intimate engagement is a deeply personal dialogue. It’s about taking these materials to their very edge, exploring their natural properties, stretching their potential without pushing them to destruction. Through this I seek to reveal the inherent beauty and enduring narrative of the continuous line, a testament to both ancient wisdom and an unbroken connection to the past
