Double figure, Llangorse sand stone 1.5 metres high, New York
NAME: Panico
Theodosiou
PROFILE:
Panico aims to develop a new vernacular in his
sculpture, something to stand alongside the existing tradition
of stone sculpture. Then, he believes he will follow in the traditions
of true artist-factors by according a contemporary feel to a
long established material.
Born in Bulawayo,
Rhodesia, Panico Theodosiou has made his home on Mynydd Illtyd,
Libanus in Powys, with his wife and two sons. He was named
after his uncle, a squadron leader in the RAF, who was lost
over Milan in the Second World War. Today he is one of the
few sculptors who carve Welsh sandstone, which he sources from
local quarries. He has sculpted all his life, heavily influenced
by the Matebele and Mashona direct sculptors. He now describes
himself as a ‘direct carver’, carving
straight onto stone without first producing a marquette.
In 1997 Pan moved to Brecon Beacons in mid- Wales. When producing
contemporary sculpture, Pan likes to work the hard local sandstone,
polishing it to give an almost gun-metal finish, which is very
special and beautiful: reflecting the light and conveying flowing
lines.
