NAME: Jem
Stiff
PROFILE:
I studied figurative sculpture in Stafford College. This course
provided me with a firm grounding in life study. Although my
work is not currently of the human figure I use my skills of
seeing form to explore my subject matter.
In 2007 I completed an MA in fine art at Cardiff University.
Since this course, my work has been mainly in wood, translating
my subject matters via carving. My daily practice is grounded
in the wood itself and the methods I use to shape and form my
objects. The ‘sculpted object’ for me is a physical
vehicle for the hidden world of our minds and feelings, as such,
my objects, I hope, induce empathic connections in the viewer.
At the moment I am interested in interpretations of everyday
objects, playing with scale and placement.
I have exhibited in Wales, England and France and have taken
part in sculpture symposiums in France.
I live and work on the Black Mountains, near Hay-on-Wye with
my wife, daughter and many animals.
