NAME: Antonia Spowers

PROFILE:

I work as an environmental sculptor in a wide range of materials. The work is related to landscape, both natural and man-made, including the unseen buried layers beneath the earth. A sense of the site-specific is important to me as it conveys meanings on many levels.
Physical materials are also important to me and I am interested in their ability to embody ideas and express transformation.  Although for some time the work has concentrated on aspects of water it is now beginning to explore issues of climate change, disruption, disconnection and damaged architecture.

I moved to Wales from London ten years ago and live on the edge of the Black Mountains. For many years I was a landscape gardener and a decorative artist before working as a sculptor.  I enjoy the contrast between Residencies and school projects and the more secluded work in the studio for exhibitions and commissions. The work is currently going through a period of change both in ideas and materials.
