NAME: Alison
Lochhead
PROFILE:
Alison Lochhead studied art and ceramics at Loughborough
College of Art and Design and Wolverhampton Polytechnic from
1971 – 1975, then a scholarship in Poland in 1975/6.
She has exhibited internationally from 1977 to
the present day, with 12 one-person shows and over 50 group exhibitions.
After working in fibre and paper, Alison has returned
to working in clay and more recently experimenting with pouring
molten iron and bronze into the ceramic bodies.
Alison travels widely working with human rights
and international development. The experiences from this
work are reflected in her sculpture.
The body of work made by Alison Lochhead reflects upon the memory
of actions and experiences of women over time. The earth
retains the marks made by humans and their presence which they
leave behind. The mistakes and behaviours of the past are
constantly repeated, little collective reflection seems to take
place. The marks made long ago are still there watching over
us and reminding us of their presence. These are the ‘watchers’,
who are figures reflecting history. They are bodies returned
to the earth, as in death. But their presence does not
die, nor their witness.
The life size bodies are made primarily from clay. The
work also incorporates other materials such as earth, metal,
coal, stone. These materials are often in conflict with
each other as well as reacting in unexpected ways during firing. The
bodies can be placed either inside or out.
