NAME: Gwyn Price
PROFILE:
I was born in South Africa, and came to Britain in the Sixties to study Sculpture, on a scholarship from the University of Natal.
I taught art in London secondary schools, and then sculpture at a Birmingham Teacher Training College.
With young children, I ran a ceramics workshop at home in Birmingham, making sculptural bone china pieces and domestic stoneware, sold in Midlands galleries.
On moving to South Wales in 1989, I taught art to A-level in various secondary schools.
On retiring from teaching I returned to making sculpture, becoming a member of the Vale of Glamorgan Artists group. I am currently chair of the Women’s Arts Association.
The work I have made recently is related to the natural forms found in my garden, and on the Welsh coast. It is also informed by a recent trip to New Zealand with its fern forests and underground volcanic activity. I enjoy the process of making, especially in carving, when the original idea evolves and changes before finding its final form. I try to find a sensation of energy and movement, maybe a new life and grace.
I carve both wood and stone, enjoying the different results each material gives. I like combining and contrasting materials – inserting small stone carvings within a larger wood one, or making a construction of various pieces to form one whole – perhaps an African influence. I also enjoy the natural flaws in wood and their influence on the final form.
