Oriel Canfas, Cardiff: 28 January - 18 February 2012

OPPORTUNITY FOR SCULPTORS
Matthew Tomalin and Mike Davies have been invited to perform a ‘Melt’ at this year’s Eisteddfod. As part of this performance there will be a small production iron pour.
Sculptors working in Wales are invited to have a small piece of work cast at this event on Thursday 4 August 2011. Mould numbers will be limited and a first-come, first served policy will be adopted. Please register your intention to bring a mould, together with its probable weight, by emailing mikedsculptor@aol.com.
Selection criteria:
There is a strict limit set on the size of the work. It must weigh no more than 50 lbs including the running system and pour cup.
Moulds will need to be delivered to site after 6.00pm on Wednesday 3 August 2011.
For reasons of safety, any moulds presented at the event will be poured at the discretion of Matthew Tomalin and Mike Davies.
Sculptors must appreciate that neither the Eisteddfod nor any member of the pour team will be responsible for the outcome of having their mould poured at this event.
With iron in short supply, each sculptor will be responsible for supplying their own iron. This must be broken and delivered to site with the mould.
Unfortunately, in adverse weather conditions ‘Melt 2011’ may have to be cancelled.

SCULPTURE TRAIL - a draft proposal by Glenn Morris

A meeting is planned for September to discuss how Sculpture Cymru can take this forward. In the meantime, this is the outline:-
1. Objective: To create and place sculpture in the environment which will aim to offer the viewer a link, alternative viewpoint or increased sense of the place, area or environment in which it exists.
2. The works are to be created by members of Sculpture Cymru.
3. It is anticipated that the pieces will stand in their own right as artworks but will also form an exhibition, of works that will be sited over an agreed trail, route, area or place as decided by the members.
4. The works will be able to be seen by anyone and will be positioned outside.
5. The works will not (necessarily) be of a type that might usually be associated with public art; that is to say they may be permanent or transient, of any material that the sculptor sees fit to use and of any size.(subject to planning laws!)
6. The works, it has been suggested, might be of an enigmatic form, not by design but more due to the placement; they may be difficult to find or placed in a manner that creates a sort of journey of discovery.
7. Members may, it has been suggested, create up to 3 works.
8. Once in place; the works will be collated into a catalogue that will give a background of the artists, a photo of the work, a map of the area and other information about the route, idea or theme that ultimately is chosen.
9. Name: To be decided. A few for thought; ‘hidden view’, ‘sense of place’?

KIDWELLY CASTLE: sculptural responses - 2012
Following on from the successful IRONSTONE project at Kidwelly Castle in 2010, Sculpture Cymru has been encouraged by CADW, Wilfred Cass (Sculpture at Goodwood) and Kidwelly Town Council to develop a similar project for 2012.
Applications for funding have been made to the Arts Council of Wales, CADW and other sources. The outline of the proposals is as follows, but is entirely dependent upon obtaining funding.
10-15 works will be selected via a UK wide Open Submission and curated by David Hastie, Director of Locws International. Sculptors will be asked to submit ideas for work in response to the Castle and its site. The Exhibition is scheduled to be open to the public from 1 June 2012 – 20 September 2012 with a Private View toward the end of June.
The Project will include a School/Residency Workshop led by a sculptor which will encourage the children to make their own responses to the Castle and the sculptural works; their artwork will be exhibited in the Town of Kidwelly during the period of the Castle exhibition.
In addition, we will hold a Stone/wood Workshop Residency in the grounds of the Castle lead by sculptors, which will allow the public to see and discuss with them how materials are worked and artworks created. This aspect of the Project will also involve craftsmen from Cadwraeth, the restoration department of CADW, who will demonstrate the working of stone and wood in a historical context. The public will also be able to take part and, ‘Have a Go’.
Material relating to the Exhibition and Workshops, in the form of articles and photography, will be commissioned (and encouraged) for uploading to Sculpture Cymru Website and Blog, with the intention of creating a continuing discourse about Sculpture in the Public Realm.
The Exhibition is scheduled to be open to the public from 1 June 2012 – 20 September 2012
