Sculpture Cymru is delighted to work in partnership with the Sixth International Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art and Cadw to host this exhibition of cast iron sculpture at Kidwelly Castle.
It is also a pleasure to be representing such a diverse and talented group of artists from an international field. All are skilled in working with iron, and have applied their considerable experience to pioneer new and innovative techniques to extend the language of sculpture.
Cadw’s aspiration is for an historic environment, which is visited, enjoyed and understood by the people of Wales and its visitors. The drama, beauty and magnetism of the sites are frequently well illustrated through the arts and not just through informed historical explanation. Creativity is a means for visitors to look at a site afresh - and maybe to use a site to explore their own creative potential.
Kidwelly Castle represents a vision of medieval times more complete that many of its better known contemporaries and plays a large part in the heritage of the town. The Castle offers a dramatic setting for viewing the sculptures and we hope visitors can enjoy and appreciate viewing the contemporary creations alongside the ancient surroundings of this monument.
Exhibition Catalogue
A 72 page fully illustrated catalogue to accompany the exhibition is available, which includes essays by Dr Peter Wakelin on the history and development of iron casting in Wales, Robert Harding on the work of sculptors presently working with cast iron and Shelagh Hourahane on the development of sculptural practices in Wales.
