ANDY GRIFFITHS

Most of my work involves the transformation of materials through the application of fire; however, I have used materials such as, salt, tar, silicone sealant, steel and bronze and more recently Blackpool rock in my work. For the past few years I have been concentrating on working in cast iron, building and running a cupolette with my students at Carmarthen School of Art, this has presented new opportunities and problems unique to sand casting and iron as a sculptural material and has introduced a more collaborative and performative element to my work. There are recurring themes in my work that are used as motifs such as, Rock and Roll, Americana, found objects and kitsch which form a lexicon of forms to manipulate into new work.

In 2013 I completed two major commissions for Chevron Oil at Milford Haven and Pembroke dock West Wales, and have just completed a commission for the Castle Quarter Development, Swansea. I recently completed a performance “Wroclaw Sunrise” in Wroclaw Poland involving lifting 180lbs of semi molten metal 5 meters into the night sky.
